The winners of our monthly Young Citizen Award for August and September can now be revealed.

Marcus Pabon-Lara, 24, has been crowned August’s winner for his dedication to charity Empowering Deaf Society, in Ley Street.

He has been volunteering with it for more than two years, bridging the gap between the deaf and hearing.

“Each day I volunteer I believe that I am breaking down the walls of the two cultures. My aim is to keep demolishing the wall and replace it with a bridge where we can all meet and sign,” he told the Recorder.

Jeskiran Kaur Rai, 15, has scooped September’s award for her tireless work feeding Ilford’s rough sleepers and helping to teach primary school pupils to read.

She told the Recorder: “As a Sikh one of the first lessons we are taught is to share what you have.”
