The Woodford Society organised a litter pick up after spaces in the area were identified as “in dire need of attention”.

Twelve adults, a toddler and a baby armed with pickers, gloves, sharps box and special purple “clean for the Queen” bags took to the streets around the station .

The team collected 20 bags of rubbish in just one hour and they were heartened when a jogger stopped to help their mission.

Communications secretary Stephan Eleftheriou said: “It is important that as a community we take responsibility for how our area is perceived – it’s easy to walk by and leave it to someone else.

“Wind is blowing rubbish but what is more concerning is that some people are using this area as a dumping ground.

“The council are more willing to listen and take action when the community are willing to get involved – they have today put two new bins on the east side of Woodford station as a direct action from our recommendations and I don’t think this would have happened if people in the community had shown resolve and willingness to clean the area.”
