A children’s hospice declared a day last week “Molly’s Day” in memory of a girl who died in 2010.

Haven House marked what would have been Molly Field’s 12th birthday by naming the day after her, while her family paid £3,835 to the charity, the cost of a day’s care.

Molly was just eight when she died of a brain tumour in September 2010. She was laid out at Haven House, High Road, Woodford Green, where she had been cared for. And her family stayed in the hospice flat until her funeral.

£50,000

Since then, mother Mel and sister Isabella have raised about £50,000 for the hospice.

Mel said: “Haven House is a wonderful place. When I found out that our stay had cost the hospice more than £8,000 I felt I had to give something back.

“They were so supportive and helpful to us during our stay, and they rely solely on donations and fundraising.

“My first event raised £10,000, so I raised my target to cover the cost of one nurse’s salary, £35,000.

“We hosted a concert called Molly’s Music which raised nearly £20,000.”

At the age of six, Isabella asked Mel if she could organise her own fundraising event.

Mel said: “Isabella organised a children’s Easter party.

“I thought I was going to have to do it and she would get all the credit but she wrote to companies for donations, and invited her friends. She raised £1,500.”

The family decided to donate to the hospice’s Pay For A Day scheme on Molly’s birthday, October 22.

“We like to celebrate that day, rather than be sad. We never feel sad when we go into Haven House, because it’s such a beautiful place,” said Mel.

“I can see myself being involved in fundraising there for the rest of my life.”

The family’s next event is a fundraising concert on November 30 at Forest School, Snaresbrook, will feature music from West End shows.
