Women have been celebrating an ancient Hindu harvest festival at a temple this week.

Members of the VHP Ilford Hindu Centre’s group for older women came together on Tuesday to recite prayers, sing hymns and eat food to celebrate Makar Sankranti, which marks the beginning of spring in the Indian subcontinent.

Volunteer Vinaya Sharma, who joined the group which meets every Tuesday at the Cleveland Road temple, said it was all about “connecting spiritually”.

“It’s a social occasion and it’s very important in the winter months that they can get out of the house every week.

“At the same time, they’re trying to connect spiritually.”
