The woman who was killed in a car crash outside Newbury Park Tube station on Monday night has been identified as Jothini Sriskandapalan.

An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned this morning.

A spokesman at Walthamstow Coroners’ Court said the initial post-mortem found the cause of death to be a severe head injury.

Jothini, named in tributes as Jothi, was driving in Eastern Avenue on Monday when her red Vauxhall Corsa collided with a silver BMW around 11pm.

Paramedics could not save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe she had been travelling westbound on the A12 and was turning across the eastbound carriageway when the collision happened.

The 23-year-old BMW driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed until June.

The tragedy has led to calls for immediate action at the junction, which is a well-known accident blackspot.

The previous victim was 69-year-old Dusan Danilovic, who was killed in a pile-up on January 1, 2011.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, promised measures to improve safety at the junction in June last year but, although Transport for London (TfL) “explored” possibilities, nothing was changed.

A spokesman for the mayor said: “He has directed TfL to make urgent improvements and we expect work on new traffic signals to be completed by the autumn.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police on 020 8597 4874.
