More than 300 people attended a fun-filled day of fundraising festivities at a Barkingside primary school.

Around £5,000 was raised at a winter fete at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School, Forest Road, on Sunday, December 8, organised by the school’s friends and Parent Teacher Association Committee. The event culminated in the lighting of a Chanukah Menorah led by Rabbonim and a grand fireworks display.

Activities during the afternoon included arts and crafts, outdoor roller skating, a gaming van, face painting, drama workshops, animal workshops, biscuit decorating, raffle, tombola and a barbecue.

Youth groups including Chigwell and Hainault Tribe, Chigwell Macabbi and Redbridge Jewish Community Centre also led activities.

Chanukah – also known as the festival of rededication – began on Sunday, December 2 and ran until Monday. It dates back to the time when the ancient Syrians were in the land of Israel and a small Jewish guerilla army, the Maccabees, ousted the ruling power.
