Central line strike: How will it affect you?

There will be no service on the Central line on Friday if the planned Tube strike goes ahead.

That’s the advice from Transport for London, who are warning passengers to plan their alternative routes in advance.

A walkout by members of the ASLEF union would see the line grind to a halt, with services not returning to normal until mid-morning on Saturday.

Is it just the Central line that will be affected?

No. The Waterloo and City will also see limited or no service on Friday. All other Tube lines will run as normal, though.

But won’t they be busier?

Yes. Transport for London has warned that interchange stations along the Central line, such as Stratford, Liverpool Street and Mile End, will be much busier, as will the lines that they serve. Customers travelling to or from stations on the Hainault loop section of the Central line can use TfL Rail services via Ilford, but these are also likely to be extremely busy.

Is there any other way I can get around?

TfL will put on an extra 80 buses to help passengers complete their journeys - and you can travel on as many routes as you like within an hour for £1.50 with the hopper fare. The DLR, Overground and TfL Rail services will all be running as normal, so you can use those, too.

What about the Night tube?

Unfortunately, if you’re planning on a night out, there won’t be a Tube to take you home if the strke goes ahead. Instead, you’ll have to make alternative arrangements - a taxi, perhaps, or the night bus.

Why is the strike happening?

Union bosses have cited a disagreement with London Underground management over a range of issues, including checking trains at the end of the night, alleged breaches of agreements and how people are managed following sickness.

Could it be called off?

That is a possibility. Talks are ongoing between the union and Tube bosses to try and resolve the situation before Friday.
