Comedy and songs from some of the West End’s favourite shows filled a church hall on Saturday, delighting the audience.

St Peter’s Church, Aldborough Road North, Newbury Park hosted a special variety show by the Ilford Operatic and Dramatic Society (IODS) entitled, Legends and Heroes of Stage and Screen.

The group performed well-known and much loved songs from the likes of the Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Les Miserables.

Comedy items proved popular, with Richard Hearn’s Mr Pastry remembered in his famous set piece The Lancers.

The show raised more than £1,170 which will be divided equally between St Peter’s Church for their work in the community and the IODS to enable the society to continue to stage shows and encourage their youth theatre project.

Rev Kate Lovesey said: “The show was an overwhelming success, much enjoyed not only by local residents but by visitors from far and wide.

“A happy, joyous occasion with much laughter and the occasional poignant moment. Our thanks to IODS for giving their time and bringing so much pleasure on a cold winter day.”
