The usually implacable MP for Woodford Green, Iain Duncan Smith, is reduced to tears in a new documentary about Britain’s attitudes to benefits.

The former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, who resigned last month in a row over disability cuts, became visibly upset whilst discussing a 19-year-old woman he had met who had given up any hope of finding employment,

The interview forms part of BBC two’s new documentary ‘Workers or shirkers? Ian Hislop’s Victorian benefits’ which airs at 8pm on Thursday.

In an interview with The Radio Times, Ian Hislop revealed his shock at the unexpected outpouring of emotion.

He said: “I just watched him cry. We’re sitting in the Department for Work and Pensions talking about his desire to increase the lot of those without any privileges or start in life and he starts welling up.”
