Wanstead residents have been asked to close their windows due to smoke from a grass fire on Wanstead Flats.
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are tackling the blaze, today (Friday, July, 27) and two hectares of grass and shrubs are alight.
This is the fourth fire in a fortnight on the usually green section of land. Woodcote Road and Bush Road are closed while the London Fire Brigade (LFB) deal with the incident and the 999 control room has taken 35 calls about the fire.
Traffic is also slow on Blake Hall Road at at the A12 exit.
A LFB spokesperson said: “During the hot weather we are attending a large number of grass fires across London.
“We’re asking the public to take care not to drop cigarettes or matches on dry grass and to keep a very close eye on barbeques.
“Dropped glass can also start fires as the sun can magnify the sun’s rays.
“Grass fires can quickly spread and cause serious damage, so if you see grass smouldering, please call 999 immediately.”
