The unsung heroes of a community care charity have come together to be recognised for their volunteering work at an awards ceremony last week.

Redbridge volunteers Dorothy Brown, Michael Esterman and Micky Kashman were recognised for their work with the charity Jewish Care.

The three Redbridge volunteers worked with those living with dementia.

Retired care manager Mrs Brown won best newcomer after caring for sufferers for up to three times a week, Mr Esterman was innovative and creative volunteer runner-up after running a reggae music group, and one of the youngest winners, Miss Kashman, 17, made regular visits to a day centre.

The charity, who provide day centres, care homes and support to about 7,000 people in London’s Jewish community, held the ceremony in honour of those who give their time to the cause.

Jewish care president Lord Levy said at the event: “I am proud to say that I am a volunteer like so many of you. Our joint contribution as volunteers is invaluable to the organisation, without it, Jewish Care would have to reduce the services it offers.”

The Redbridge-based volunteers were among 40 award-winning charity helpers, with author Ivor Baddiel handing out the accolades.

Miss Kashman, who volunteers at the Dennis Centre, Gants Hill, said: “I love the people there and we have such a good laugh.

“I have just as much fun as I do with friends my own age, the day centre members are so great.”
