Fifteen thousand newly-planted trees in Ray Park, Woodford Green, received some tender loving care on Tuesday.

The saplings were planted in the Snakes Lane East park in January as part of a partnership between residents and charity Trees for Cities.

And more green-fingered volunteers have now visited to spread wood chip mulch around the trees.

It will help to maintain soil moisture, reduce the germination and growth of weeds and keep soil warmer.

The residents helped out the nature conservation rangers from Vision Redbridge, Redbridge Council’s leisure and culture arm.

They moved the wood chip from big piles in wheelbarrows before spreading it around the trees.

Further volunteering opportunities with the rangers can be found at www.redbridge.gov.uk.
