A 16-year-old on a mission to help the environment has won an award for a video she made about sustainability.
Saba Qureshi won the Eurostar Young People’s Trust for the Environment competition and visited the European Parliament in Brussels to talk to MEPs.
She said she was very excited to visit the parliament especially getting the opportunity to discuss her ideas with influential policymakers.
Saba said: “The environment is our natural habitat - we live on it, depend on it and sadly in recent years have been exploiting it.
“This recklessness must stop and I would like to be at the forefront of the effort to achieve that.”
She says she would like to study biological science at university, specialising in ecology, with the aim of going into environmental conservation as a career.
Saba said: “I like to keep up to date with the latest news, particularly that regarding the environment and my thirst for knowledge introduced me to the Young Person’s Trust for the Environment.”
She is now in the running for the Recorder/Redbridge Rotary Club Young Citizen Award sponsored by the Exchange Ilford shopping centre for her hard work raising environmental awareness.
While visiting the European Parliament in Brussels, she met Sarah Ludford the Liberal Democrat MEP for London and showed her the video she had made.
Saba said: “The prospect of meeting with such influential figures was exciting and I couldn’t wait to share with my views and ideas.”
Miss Ludford said she was very impressed with the video and Saba’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
She said: “It was a great pleasure to meet Saba. I’m absolutely sure she has a very bright future ahead of her.”
