Vandals put out lights before Epiphany on Wanstead Christmas tree

An act of vandalism on a Christmas tree in Wanstead has been described as “really, really sad” by Conservative Cllr Colin Cronin.

The tree located in George Green was erected as a result of a resident campaign and when the lights at the back of the tree stopped working, Cllr Cronin asked council employees to investigate.

When the cause was attributed to vandalism, rather than a fault Cllr Cronin said: “The mind boggles, it is really, really sad.

“You have to wonder about the mentality of these people.

“I have been in conversation with officers and establishing if we can see anything on CCTV.”

Half the tree maybe in darkness but there is still a silver lining.

“At least it happened towards the end of the Christmas celebrations,” added Cllr Cronin.
