A hazard zone was set up around Princes Avenue, Woodford Green yesterday following the discovery of an ordnance shell.
Police attended the scene at 16.39 after the devices was unearthed in the rear garden of a property.
The explosives team in was called in and it was found to be an empty cylinder from the Second World War.
It was removed by police and residents were allowed back into their homes by 6.15pm.
