No one was hurt in the fire at the Barkingside branch of Subway this afternoon.
Fire crews from Woodford and Hainault were called to the sandwich shop, in High Street, at 3.30pm.
Hainault watch manager Tom Edwards said the fire was small.
He added: “They were repairing parts of the roof and someone accidentally started the fire because they use gas and bitumen and things.”
The fire has been put out and the shop is open for business as normal.
