The elderly couple found dead in their Hainault home on Sunday have been named locally as Alfred Stringer and Eileen Knight.

Mr Stringer, believed to 74, and Ms Knight, in her 80s, were found in the house in Greenwood Gardens they had shared for more than 32 years.

Police said the deaths were “not suspicious”.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said Ms Knight’s daughter discovered the bodies when she visited the house.

She added: “She said she’d been trying to call her mum since Friday to check on her because she had the flu.

“She knew something wasn’t right when she saw the door was open.”

Tributes and flowers now cover the doorstep of the empty home.

Residents in the quiet Hainault street described a “quiet” couple who were “always together”.

Neighbour Marion Small said the Mr Stringer had lived in the house with mother, Betty, until she passed away.

She added: “I saw him shopping last week when the weather was nice.

“I have been here for 32 years and they’ve been here all that time.

“They were always together, going shopping, coming home. Always.”
