Large quantities of illicit alcohol and cigarettes were found in an undercover bust on shops in the borough.

Redbridge Trading Standard went on an operation on Monday and discovered that four out of 10 shops visited, were selling illicit goods including prescription drugs.

“Large quantities of illicit alcohol were uncovered, along with quantities of illicit tobacco from most of the premises visited,” a Redbridge Council spokesperson wrote.

“The team also seized a substantial amount of prescription medicine that one shop was selling ‘under the counter’.”

The operation to uncover illicit trade in Redbridge was undertaken as part of London Trading Standards Week 2017.

The event, which runs from Monday September 25 to 29, is the first London wide awareness campaign aimed at showcasing efforts to ensure consumers and reputable businesses are protected across the capital.

London’s 33 local authority Trading Standards services are joining forces to bring to light the key issues that affect consumers and businesses.
