Two people made a daring dash across a roof to escape a house fire in Ilford yesterday.

Around 20 firefighters were called to the blaze in the ground floor of a terraced house, in Wanstead Park Avenue, at 12.52pm.

Four fire engines from Ilford, Barking and Stratford were dispatched, however before crews had arrived two residents escaped from the building via a flat roof on the first floor.

Both were brought to safety using an extension ladder and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The pair were then rushed to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

Firefighters continued to battle the blaze, until it was under control by 1.38pm.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “The cause of the fire is accidental.”
