Tributes are coming in after the death of Redbridge Chamber of Commerce chairman Julie Woodward, who a colleague has described as leaving a “lasting legacy” in the borough.

Julie died suddenly aged 74 on Friday while on holiday in her native Ireland after suffering a stroke in her sleep overnight on Thursday.

She had a lengthy career, working in personnel and HR for various local businesses. Prior to her retirement she had held the position of personnel manager at Ilford town centre based Britannia Music, for a number of years.

After retirement, Julie continued to be involved in different areas of Redbridge life. Besides being chairman of the chamber she was a governor of Grove Primary School, Chadwell Heath, and a former magistrate.

Julie also helped many local charities, particularly Victim Support. A fanatical sports fan, she was a long-term season ticket holder at her beloved West Ham.

Chamber colleague Linda Porter said: “No matter what Julie encountered during her life, she always had a positive attitude. If anybody needed help, invariably it was Julie who offered it without hesitation. She has left a lasting legacy in Redbridge and will be sadly missed.”

Linda added that Julie’s husband Ray, with whom she celebrated 53 years of marriage in September, was never far away providing “wonderful support”.

There will be a private cremation, with plans for a memorial service in Ilford at a later date.

Recorder editor Chris Carter said: “Julie’s death is a huge loss to the Redbridge business community. I worked with her on various projects for several years and she worked tirelessly to give businesses a voice.

“She had the knack of being able to twist our arms to support any of her initiatives and I will miss her greatly.

“My thoughts are with her husband Ray and all her family.”
