There were five suicides on the train line through Ilford last year, down from a high of 19.

The Redbridge Samaritans have been visiting platforms at Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes, Chadwell Heath and other stations on the Liverpool Street to Shenfield line to talk to vulnerable people and train staff.

But statistics in the group’s annual report still show huge need for help from residents with emotional problems, who are struggling to cope or at risk of suicide.

More than 9,600 people contacted the charity, based in Mildmay Road, Ilford, last year.

The figure was slightly down on 2011 but there is a growing proportion of young callers.

A new computer and phone system is currently being installed so callers can reach volunteers more easily.

The Samaritans have decided to end visits to the homeless shelter in York Road, Ilford.

Director Timothy Randall, who is stepping down from the post in June, said: “The character of the shelter has itself quickly evolved in a short space of time such that there was no longer a rationale for our continued presence.”
