A tireless charity volunteer has held six separate birthday parties as she marked a momentous milestone.
Jean Platman, of Clayhall, a founder member of the Chigwell & Hainault League of Jewish Women, celebrated her 100th birthday at the gatherings as she couldn’t host all of her well-wishers at once.
She received birthday cards from the Queen and MP Iain Duncan Smith, enjoyed cake and received flowers, chocolates and perfumes from family and friends.
Mrs Platman is a keen supporter of the League of Jewish Women and only stopped volunteering in the past 10 years due to health problems.
Her daughter-in-law Frances Platman said: “She’s very kind and she’s a very determined woman, that’s why she’s reached 100.”
She added: “She was chuffed to get the card from the Queen.”
Mrs Platman was born in Scotland, moved to Stepney and settled in Clayhall before the Second World War, after getting married.
She worked in factories before she got married, and was known as “N-Jean” – a play on “engine” – for her work ethic. She later worked with her husband at his tailoring business.
