A woman who celebrated the start of her 100th year last week enjoyed a birthday drink on a throne fit for a queen.

Maud Norfolk was the belle of the ball on Thursday, surrounded by friends and family.

Her son Freddie Norfolk, 70, said his mother’s secret to a long life was “a drop of brandy.”

“We had a wonderful afternoon, with about 50 people, including mum’s 93-year-old sister Violet,” he told the Recorder.

“It was a great opportunity for the family to get together.

“Mum enjoyed a spot of champagne, we had an excellent singer entertain us and we all enjoyed some time on the microphone!”

Maud enjoyed her time on the throne, which matched her congratulatory telegram from the Queen.

Freddie said: “We’ve framed the card, you have to really.”
