A nun who left her role at an Ilford school after working as its chaplain for more than 10 years has had a prayer room named after her.

Sister Katharine Glencross is the last nun to work at Ilford Ursuline Preparatory School in Coventry Road, Ilford.

She recently moved to Lancaster for a new assignment, helping mothers and young children.

Headteacher Richard Hester said: “Not only was this a big change for the school and Sister Katharine but it marks a moment in history.

“Despite the decrease in the presence of the sisters, the ethos and message of St Angela Merici is carried on throughout the schools.”

Jemma Ashwell, an administration assistant, said: “Everyone was sad to see her go. She kept everyone calm because she led meditation.

“She left a great impression. We will always love Sister Katharine.”
