SIXTY six years ago this month Hitler launched his deadly air assault on Ilford with his new secret weapon – we want to hear from people who lived through the town’s most terrifying time in its history.

It was on October 26, 1944 that the first V2 rocket fell on the town, hitting Courtland Avenue, off the Drive Ilford. By the time the last rocket struck on March 27 in Atherton Road, Clayhall 100 people from Ilford and its surrounding districts were dead.

John Barfoot, of Chadwell Heath remembers the Nazis changing tactics. “Not being evacuated from Ilford during the war, I recall the V1 flying bombs were still coming over intermittently when the V2 rockets began to arrive unannounced.”

The town was to be subjected to five months of terror that caused death and destruction, but was to herald the last attempts by Hitler to bring London to its knees.
