A volunteer who gives up his Friday nights to help a children’s swimming club this week’s nominee for the Recorder/Redbridge Rotary Young Citizen award.

James Fox was first introduced to the Ilford-based Friday Evening Swimming Group through the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at his school three years ago.

Now 16, he has continued to work with the disabled young people at the club every week and also on trips to places like the Redbridge-owned Glasbury House in Herefordshire which they visited in July.

The swimming group’s co-ordinator, Marion May, said: “James is a lovely young man and is great with the younger swimmers, he’s humorous but gentle with them.

“He’s even been caught singing with them – not something you’d expect a teenage boy doing.”

The Campion School student’s efforts, commitment and sacrifices have not gone unnoticed over the years.

He successfully completed his Duke of Edinburgh award and also won a Jack Petchey Foundation award last month.

The teen decided to spend the £200 grant he received from the charity on buying presents for the children in Friday Evening Swimming Group putting the remainder to their Christmas meal and celebration which was held last week.

Mrs May said: “We officially presented James with his award at the party and we really appreciate him at the club.

“He is very reliable and friendly and his volunteering role is a great opportunity for someone of his age group to do something amazing.

“Sometimes we have other activities that he comes along to and helps the young people and their families out.”

James, of Norwood Avenue, Romford, is the final nominee for this year’s Young Citizen award, sponsored by the Exchange Ilford shopping centre, and was entered into the December competition which he has also been named the winner.

Along with the Young Citizen winners for each month James will be placed into an annual competition where the final annual winner will be announced at the Redbridge Mayor’s Community Awards in the spring.
