A crackdown on the sale of super-strength alcohol came into force yesterday.
Shopkeepers in parts of Cranbrook Road, Ilford, have volunteered to stop selling high-strength beer, lager and cider in an effort to curb anti-behaviour in the area.
Last month, the Recorder met visited the town’s off-licences and found the majority selling single cans of super-strength drinks.
Nine per cent lager in 500ml cans - containing 4.5 units, more than the maximum recommended daily intake for a man - was readily available.
Ilford town centre has been designated a cumulative impact zone, granting the council greater powers to combat sale of the drinks.
Any retailer applying for a licence to sell alcohol will prevented from selling strong and cider, while those already with licences face having the opening hours cut if they are selling the products to people who appear drunk.
