A 17-year-old girl has described her horror at finding a fly in her sandwich after she had eaten most of it.

Unlike the old lady from the nursery rhyme, Year 12 student Sophie wasn’t overjoyed at the extra protein in her lunch.

Sophie visited sandwich store Subway, Cranbook Road, Ilford, last Thursday, on her lunch break from sixth form.

After returning to The Ursuline Academy, Morland Road, Ilford, she ate most of her chicken tikka sandwich before discovering the fly embedded in the bread.

She said: “I was absolutely disgusted.

“I had almost finished the sandwich and then my friend pointed it out.

“I went back to the store with my friend, and they took they took the rest of the sandwich back, as they said they would show the suppliers.”

“I then had to ask for my money back which they then returned.

“Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be returning.”

A Subway spokesman said the company was very sorry to hear about Sophie’s experience.

He said: “We have very strict procedures in place to ensure that our stores, which are all operated by franchisees, serve products safely and to customers’ satisfaction.

“The franchise owner was made aware of this incident and a full refund was offered and accepted by the customer.

“We are in the process of liaising with the customer regarding this incident and will take necessary action.”
