Plans for a six-storey block of flats in South Woodford High Road have been thrown out.

Developer MAKE 18 had applied for its designs for 142-146 High Road, South Woodford in Churchfields ward to be approved, but was denied by Redbridge Council at a planning committee meeting last week (Thursday, November 29).

Back in May, the authority granted a different developer permission to build a five-storey block of flats on the site, which would have included higher levels of affordable housing, but councillors voted down plans for an extra floor on the building and fewer affordable homes.

The six-storey block would have included 13 one-bedroom flats and 15 two-bedroom flats, three of which would have had wheelchair access and ten per cent of which would have been affordable housing.

Now, with permission for a five-storey block still in place, the number of bedrooms is set to reduce back to the original plan for 13 one-bedroom flats and 13 two-bedroom flats.

The new application had wracked up 54 formal notices of objection as well as an online petition that had gathered more than 1,700 signatures against the plans.

Cllr Stephen Adams, of Churchfields ward, spoke against the plans.

He said: “I am pleased that the committee took note of multiple concerns, recognising developer greed, and voting down the application. We will continue to fight for appropriate and sustainable development for our area.”
