Redbridge awoke to thick snow today as the winter tightened its grip on the borough with travel disrupted on roads and rails.

Residents like Ron Jeffries and his neighbours in Newbury Park made the most of a snowy Sunday with snowmen springing up all over the area.

In Goodmayes Iftekhar Kashmiri spotted an abandoned ambulance after apparently being damaged in a minor accident,

Tube services today were said to have started well but with “some issues” on the outer reaches of the Central and Jubilee lines. These were resolved by 8.25am, a Transport for London spokeswoman said.

Some delays are still occurring on the lines that should be running this weekend due to adverse weather conditions, non-availability of staff and signal failure.

On the trains, there is disruption on Greater Anglia trains between Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale, and between Liverpool Street and Chingford.

There is more Greater Anglia disruption between Liverpool Street and Enfield Town, and between Liverpool Street and Hertford East due to overhead line problems at Seven Sisters.

Delays of up to 20 minutes are reported on C2C services due to the weather.

The capital’s roads and motorways around London do not appear to be too severely affected at the moment, but the Highways Agency is urging motorists to take extra care today.

Drivers on sections of the M25 in Hertfordshire were trapped in gridlock throughout the night, but the Highways Agency said the M25 was now flowing well.

All London bus routes are operating this morning following a few “curtailments” to the night bus services, Transport for London (TfL) said.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson tweeted this morning: “2000 tonnes of grit put down overnight. Most buses & tube lines running. Working on those which aren’t.”

A London City Airport notice on its website says snow is being cleared and the runway is expected to open as normal at 12.30pm but passengers should check their flight status.

Paul Mott, senior forecaster with MeteoGroup, said at 10am today: “It’s stopped snowing now.

“In the south-east it will stay cold, reaching 1C (34F) at best. In London temperatures may reach 2C (36F), and we expect a partial thaw.

“It will be a largely dry day and this evening there may be fog, after a cold day, with wet surfaces of snow on the ground.

“It will be cold again tonight, though not as cold as it has been - temperatures are expected to fall to a degree or two below freezing in the east and south east. We expect the coming week to be mostly dry, and staying cold.”
