Severe delays: A12 Newbury Park cordoned off due to suspected gas leak

Buildings have been evacuated and the A12 has been cordoned off due to a suspected gas leak.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to an address in Eastern Avenue near to Newbury Park station at 1.30pm.

Firefighters have taken readings and as a precaution have set up an exclusion zone.

About 20 people have been moved to safety from nearby shops and houses.

Dr Michael Cruse of Gants Hill said: “It is police cars galore down there,

“The road has been sectioned off between Horns road and the Aldborough Road North.”

An LFB spokeswomen said: “We were called at Eastern Avenue to what is believed to be a suspected gas leak.

“We sent two fire engines and a range of specialist equipment.

“The situation is ongoing.”

The eastbound section of the A12 from Horns Road to Aldborough Road North is closed.

Expect severe delays and diversions.

Bus numbers, 66, 296 and 396 have been rerouted.
