Roll up, roll up - top European circus heads to Wanstead

»Roll up, roll up! It’s time to grab your seat under the big top and enjoy one of Europe’s top circuses when it arrives in Wanstead offering breathtaking trapeze artists, daring jugglers and everyone’s favourite clown.
Billy Smart’s Circus, one of the most famous names in the business, is back with a 2013 tour, hoping to prove that it is still ahead of the times with impressive stunts and live acts to keep the whole family entertained.
The circus first began in 1946 when a successful showman, known to his family as The Guv’nor, bought a big top and added circus performances to his funfair as an extra “attraction”. The circus soon took precedence.
Highlights this year include a fantastic Australian flying trapeze act, Desiree’s balancing act in which she fires a bow and arrow with her feet, breath-taking aerialists and even a firefighter who works his routine on a flaming ladder.
Clown Angelo Chaves, 43, said: “I love entertaining the crowd with jokes and silliness.
“Every day is completely different, and when we travel to different countries the laughs are always at different times.”
Angelo, who followed in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps by joining the circus, added: “We have so many impressive acts who are guaranteed to entertain you.
“The whole show is just very fun.”
The man behind the circus was featured in BBC programme Tribute to Billy Smart, which continued as a Christmas tradition long after regular touring last ceased in 1971, with audiences peaking at 21 million.
The circus will set up camp at Wanstead Flats, Aldersbrook Road, Wanstead, from Wednesday until May 6. To book tickets call 0844 415 5228.
