Residents are invited to join a new group which will scrutinise the use of stop and search powers.
Redbridge police are planning to form a stop and search monitoring group, which will see members of the public review local redacted stop and search records.
A spokesman said: “Stop and search powers, when used properly, are an important tool in the fight against crime. Their effectiveness can be measured in a variety of ways from arrests and out of court disposals to the more difficult to quantify, such as the prevention and detection of crime.
“However, if their use causes a loss of confidence within the community, then the principle of policing by consent is undermined and the ability of the police to work in partnership with the community to tackle crime is reduced.
“We want you to challenge us and tell us how we can do it better.”
Interested residents aged over 18 are invited to attend Ilford police station, in High Road, at 7pm on June 27.
A member of the senior leadership team will be present to meet you and hear your views.
