A Newbury Park resident has told of the horrifying scene after a crash in Eastern Avenue that killed a 29-year-old woman last night.

Mahmul Islam said he heard a “big bang” from his home in Hertford Road and rushed to the scene.

He added: “I can’t describe it, the cars were so badly damaged.

“When the ambulances came I thought the lady might be ok but she was dead.”

Police believe the woman, who was driving a red Vauxhall Corsa, had been travelling westbound on the A12 and was turning across the eastbound carriageway into Newbury Park station when the collision happened shortly after 11pm.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed and she will be formally identified tomorrow during a post mortem.

The 23-year-old driver of the silver BMW that collided with her car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash but discharged into police custody.

The junction is a well-known accident blackspot, where 69-year-old lollipop man Dusan Danilovic was killed in a pile-up on January 1 2011.

Mr Islam said he has seen numerous crashes at the spot in the 10 years he has lived in the area.

On Twitter, @MrQuisling wrote: “Another crash on the Eastern Av, same place, outside Newbury Park Station. How long [and how] many more incidents til they change something?”

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, pledged to improve safety at the station junction in June last year.

Reponding to a Question Time request by Havering and Redbridge AM Roger Evans, he said new traffic lights would be installed by October 2013.

He said “other measures” would be put in place in the meantime but it is unclear if changes have been made.

The mayor’s office has been asked for a comment.
