Annual general meetings aren’t known for being exciting, but RedbridgeCVS managed to spice up their version on Wednesday with card games, recipe sharing and an interview with a Paralympic Games volunteer.
The charity which promotes volunteering in the borough heard from Gamesmaker Nilda Dias who told more than 70 guests about regaining her self-esteem by helping others.
There were seated physical activities and knitting lessons, with Mayor of Redbridge Muhammed Javed shown some stitching tips during the meeting in Forest House, Clements Road, Ilford.
Pupils from Mayfield School in Pedley Road, Goodmayes, shared their knowledge of modern technology.
Ms Dias, who is Portuguese and who volunteers at the Redbridge Volunteer Centre, also in Forest House, said: “From personal experience, before I started at the centre I was quite frustrated because I was losing my confidence and losing my English.
“Since I started volunteering, I have my self esteem back and I feel confident.
“A few months ago I wouldn’t have been able to stand here and talk like this.”
Liz Walker, the centre’s manager, gave a presentation on volunteering opportunities in Redbridge.
