BUDDING volunteers have just two days to apply for their spot at the London Olympic Games.

General volunteers, called Games Makers, will be involved in a range of aspects of the 2012 event.

Roles include drivers, uniform distributors, ticket checking and airport welcoming.

Barkingside resident Gerald Sheridan is applying and says others should do the same.

The 77-year-old was a spectator for the London Games in 1948 and has fond memories of the events and the impact that the Games had on post war Londoners.

He said: “I remember the huge numbers of people when we got to Wembley, it was incredible. “The 1948 Games were exhilarating, we had a wonderful time and Londoners were inspired for years afterwards as a result.”

He added: “Everyone in Redbridge who can should apply to volunteer. If I can do it anyone can - I can’t wait.”

Up to 70,000 Games Maker volunteers will be needed during the competition.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games is looking for people with good customer service skills who are passionate about London 2012 to apply.

Applicants need to be over 18 by January 1 2012, eligible to volunteer in the UK and willing to give up at least 10 days in the summer of 2012.

You must also be able to travel to the venue you will be needed in, to attend three training days in London and be willing to be placed in a range of roles.

Transport to the venues will be free of charge for volunteers, and all the necessary training and uniforms will also be provided.
