The leader of the borough’s Conservatives has given Theresa May, who is set to become the new prime minister, his seal of approval.
Cllr Paul Canal said: “I’m delighted, she’s exactly the right person to lead the country going forward.
“After the momentous decision we made [about the EU] we need stability, we need intelligence, and she has that in abundance.”
He added: “It’s excellent that we have a second woman prime minister – all that Labour had was a pink bus.”
Cllr Canal said Mrs May was coming into power during a “crucial time” in the country.
He added: “She said ‘Brexit means Brexit’ and I have no doubt that everyone will get behind our new prime minister.”
Labour’s Ilford North MP Wes Streeting was not as enthused.
He said: “She is responsible for backing George Osborne’s failed economic policies, for the loss of 18,000 police officers and for disruption at the UK Border Agency, Passport Office and UK Visas and Immigration.
“She was the home secretary that sent vans brandishing the words ‘Go Home’ to the streets of Ilford.”
He added: “I will continue to hold this government to account no matter who the prime minister happens to be.”
