A group championing women’s rights celebrated Eid al-Fitr by hosting a party to bring people of all faiths and none together.

About 40 women were joined by Redbridge Mayor Cllr Gurdial Bhamra at the Awaaz event at Loxford Children’s Centre, Ilford Lane, Ilford, yesterday.

Guests dressed up, ate food and exchanged gifts.

“It went very well,” said the group’s chairwoman and founder Bushra Tahir.

“It was a cross-cultural event, we wanted to celebrate Eid with Muslim and non-Muslim ladies, as we always celebrate other events too, like Diwali and Vaisakhi.

“It’s about keeping the community together and increasing awareness of other religions.”

She said the mayor enjoyed speaking with the party guests.

“It’s about getting together and getting to know each other,” she added. “Eid is about sharing and caring.”
