Redbridge marks Eid with special services

The Festival of Sacrifice, or Eid al Adha, was celebrated on Friday in remembrance of the sacrifice the prophet Ibrahim was prepared to make.

Muslims believe that God appeared in a dream to Ibrahim and told him to sacrifice his son Ishmael.

As Ibrahim prepared to kill his son, God stopped him and gave him a sheep to kill instead.

Ghazanfer Ali, chairman of the Ilford Islamic Centre, said: “It’s the remembrance of the prophet Ibrahim who is also a prophet for Jews and Christians. It’s remembering his sacrifice and hardship.”

The day was marked by special services at the centre in Albert Road, Ilford followed by special meals and gatherings in peoples’ homes.
