Holocaust survivor Issy Hahn died at his home in Clayhall on Saturday, at the age of 85.
Issy was born in Konin, Poland and was sent to Auschwitz with his brother Karol. The brothers survived and Issy told his story in his book A Life Sentence of Memories.
After settling in Redbridge Issy was a high profile campaigner for the horrors of the Holocaust to be forever remembered. After another prominent Redbridge survivor Leon Greenman died Issy teamed up with the Recorder to raise money for a memorial and also produced a design to be included.
Issy’s son David, said of his dad: “He was always trying to educate people irrespective of their race or creed.
“I remember him once being asked by a little black girl if the Nazis treated black people differently to Jewish people and he replied: ‘A human being is a human being, irrespective of race or creed - if you cut someone whoever they are, they bleed’.”
