A Redbridge group is hoping to win funding for a new project to get unemployed young people to start their own businesses.

The League of British Muslims has applied to the Royal Bank of Scotland’s “Inspiring Enterprise” competition to kick-start their plans.

They have got through the first round but are up against seven other groups for the grant.

The League’s project aims to help under-25s start their own mini-enterprises with help from Asda, Sainsbury’s Tesco and other firms.

Participants are re-branding donated new clothes to sell on with support from local business entrepreneurs.

They will also be given comprehensive training in running a business, bookkeeping, marketing and their legal responsibilities, such as self assessment and tax.

League of British Muslims chairman Bashir Chaudhry MBE said: “Unemployment in the south of Redbridge is very high and there aren’t many opportunities.

“This project will help young people get out of the house and do something positive for themselves and their families.”

The Mini Enterprise Business Support Scheme (MEBOSS) would start with 50 young unemployed people.
