Redbridge Council has been given £100,000 by the Mayor of London to improve air quality in the borough.

Last month it was revealed that the High Road running through Ilford was the second-most polluted street in the whole of London.

Chapel Road, in Ilford, the A12 Eastern Avenue, Cambridge Park Road, in Wanstead, and Cranbrook Road also had high levels of pollutants.

Projects including “green walls” to absorb toxic gases, screens and tree planting are now planned to combat the problem.

The money, to be spent over the next three years, will also go towards education campaigns showing residents what they can do to reduce emissions as well as exposure to harmful pollutants.

Cllr Alex Wilson, cabinet member for public protection and planning, said: “An important part of keeping Redbridge cleaner involves taking steps to ensure that we reduce our carbon footprint and improve the quality of the air in the borough.

“I’m delighted that we were able to secure this funding so we can use innovative techniques to improve the quality of air near some schools and ensure that students understand the benefits of having a green lifestyle.”
