Hundreds of people came together in Ilford town centre to greet firefighters, police officers and volunteer groups.

Redbridge Council of Voluntary Services (CVS) ran a Community Day in High Street on Thursday, August 30.

Ross Diamond, the group’s chief executive officer, said: “We hope that many people were inspired to become volunteers and to learn more about local services.”

He spoke of how a senior police officer took part in a “Fit For Fun” Zumba taster session while firefighters demonstrated the way they can extract people from a crashed car by slicing through it.

He added: “I look forward to next year’s Community Day and will try to remember sun-block next time!”

Among the attendees was deputy mayor Cllr Taifur Rashid, who spoke the borough’s Autism Ambassadors.

More than 50 organisations were represented and the event included public art installations, pasta-making workshops and a stall where guests could also get henna tattoos.
