A Redbridge councillor has said he was delighted to meet the Prime Minister at his country residence, Chequers, on Thursday.

Cllr Paul Canal was given a personal tour of the Elizabethan country house in Buckinghamshire where former Wanstead and Woodford MP, Sir Winston Churchill, wrote his wartime speeches.

Cllr Canal, recently elected chairman of London North Eastern Conservatives, said: “It was a privilege to stand in the Hawtrey Room where Wanstead and Woodford’s greatest MP wrote his war time speeches.

“Chequers has been involved in nearly every major episode in British history.”

The tour included Churchill’s library and cinema and Mr Cameron’s private study and walled gardens, all described by Cllr Canal as “breathtaking.”

He also gave a thumbs up to the Chequers kitchen, saying the afternoon tea was “irresistible” and “fatal” to his diet

Cllr Canal added: “I hope Chequers is David Cameron’s country home for the next ten years”.
