A new swimming pool will be built in Wanstead this year..

Redbridge Council has announced building work will begin at Wanstead High School, Redbridge Lane West, in the autumn.

The local authority hopes to fund the pool with contributions from Sport England, with the remainder of the funding coming from internal capital and borrowing at a preferential rate.

In time the venture should be self-sufficient with the running costs being balanced by the admission fees, making the project “cost neutral”.

Leader of the council, Councillor Jas Athwal said: “When Labour took control of the council I always said we are

not here to oversee decline.

“The people of Wanstead and neighbouring wards deserve the same high quality services that we’re already delivering for the rest of Redbridge.

“The Conservatives left our borough with a totally inadequate single pool and we are determined as a

council to put this right and deliver results for Redbridge.”

Redbridge Labour said it has already delivered on this promise with the Loxford Pool, which opened last year, and

the new Mayfield Pool which is opening in the next few months.

It stated that the Wanstead pool will help improve resident’s health and wellbeing.

Wanstead Councillor and cabinet member for civic pride, Cllr Sheila Bain said: “This is great news for

local people, who now won’t have to travel miles to have a swim.”
