Fraudsters are trying to trick Redbridge residents out of their savings by claiming they’re due a refund on their council tax.

Redbridge Council has issued a warning after Action Fraud reported a sharp increase in the number of reports in the past few weeks.

Councillor Kam Rai, cabinet member for finance and support services, said: “Fraudsters posing as council officers are cold-calling residents stating that they are eligible for a rebate.

“There has been a sharp increase nationally in the number of reports relating to fake council tax refunds, including some in Redbridge in recent weeks.

“The caller tells potential victims that they are due a substantial rebate, usually because their council tax band is too high.

“They will tell you that they can get you a refund but ask for a fee payment in advance to claim it back and ask for bank details.

“I urge residents to be alert and not make any payments to cold callers.”
