A prayer for unity in the Church of England was held on Thursday after the controversial vote against women bishops.
Churches in the Diocese of Chelmsford took part to show solidarity after divisions were caused by the General Synod voting against having women bishops.
Rev Annie McTighe, of St Andrew, Immans Row, Woodford Green, said: “I was disappointed when the vote was announced. However, for me personally it did not signal a lack of support for women leadership in the church. I know that it will come about in the right time.”
Rev Robert Hampson, of Holy Trinity Church, Hermon Hill, South Woodford said the Bible outlines the different roles of men and women.
He added: “While women ought to be doctors, lawyers and MPs the Bible says that spiritual headship belongs to the man. The Bible recognises roles, which is another way of saying expertise.”
