A charity is being given nearly £190,000 towards its work helping women into work.

The London Councils group is funding projects at Redbridge Council for Voluntary Service for the next two years.

The charity in Clements Road, Ilford, supports the voluntary and community sector.

All 34 London boroughs contribute to the grants programme, which is splitting £9.4million between 34 groups.

The money is used to commission specific services rather than fund the organisations.

Initiatives run by Shelter, Age Concern and the Refugee Council are among those benefiting.

Applications aimed to tackle homelessness, sexual and domestic violence and poverty using employment training.

Grants committee chairman, Lambeth Cllr Paul McGlone, said: “There is a much smaller budget for the grants programme this year, but we want what funding is available to go as far as possible across London.”

London boroughs have been putting money into the London Councils grants programme for 26 years.
