A Redbridge charity for women taught its members how to protect themselves against violence on the streets and at home in Ilford this week.

Members of Redbridge Disabled Women’s Welfare Association (RDWWA) learnt how to fight back at The Jack Carter Centre, in The Drive, Ilford,

The group was founded in 1993 to help disabled and elderly women in the area, but has expanded its work into mental health and campaign issues.

The event, which was attended by the deputy Mayor of Redbridge Councillor Ashley Kissin, was organised by the group’s chairwoman Abida Iqbal who emphasised the importance of the class.

She said: “In the last 24 years this is the first time we held a self defence demonstration which was very much needed.
