A much-loved Gants Hill bagel shop could be turned into a private medical centre.

Planning permission has been submitted to convert Shalom Hot Bagels, Woodford Avenue, into a private doctor, dentist and travel clinic.

In the plans, the applicant’s agent, Client Design Services Limited, said the site is ideal for a surgery as it has a large area on one level which will give disabled patients easy access.

It hopes to turn the bakery into four consulting rooms, a nursing consultant room and a dental suite and offer sexual health testing, counselling, minor surgery and ultrasound scanning.

“Redbridge and Gants Hill specifically have an overall lack of clinics that offer such facilities,” it said.

“A new private medical clinic will certainly help to improve patient access to medical services, especially those that are difficult to access via the NHS.

“The clinic will deliver flexible and adaptable community healthcare facilities to meet the community needs.”

The application said Redbridge is one of the most diverse boroughs in the country with 37per cent of residents being born outside of the UK.

If approval is granted, the clinic will employee “multi-language speaking staff” to work at the clinic to help patients who do not speak English.

The agent also notes that lots of Redbridge children and adults carry excessive weight, and it wants to run programs to combate this.

“One-fifth of children aged four to five years old and over a third of children aged 10-11 years are overweight or obese,” it added.

“It is estimated that 55pc of adults are either overweight or obese. “In addition to this, there is a growing prevalence of diabetes within this local community.

“The clinic will aim to provide weight loss and diabetes services”

The application said the Local Plan paved the way for increased housing in this area and also mentioned the need for more medical facilities.

It said the spot has good transport links and there is free parking adjacent to the site.

“The private medical clinic will aim to serve the local community by providing private medical services thus supporting the local struggling NHS services,” it said.

The application can be viewed on Redbridge Council planning website.
